The showy hats made of Canadian bearskin have been used by the British Real guards at the Buckingham palace for almost two centuries. Now, they could be substituted by synthetical materials.
According to “The Daily Telegraph”, Baroness Taylor, the minister for defence procurement, met some weeks ago with representatives of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) called PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)
The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) is willing to study the possibility of using an alternative material that the soldiers can wear in any weather conditions.
“The MoD is not opposed to the use of synthetic materials as an alternative to bearskins, provided such materials meet the requirement for a high-quality product that performs adequately in all weather conditions”, a MoD spokesman said.
