While Microsoft has not commented anything regarding the possibility of upgrading the current phones running Windows Mobile to its new mobile software Windows 7, finally it has been confirmed (officially) that the current apps won’t work on the new platform.
According to Charlie Kindel, Windows Phone Application Platform & Developer Experience program manager, “to deliver what developers expect in the developer platform we’ve had to change how phone apps were written. One result of this is previous Windows mobile applications will not run on Windows Phone 7 Series”. Kindel wrote this statement in a blog post on Thursday afternoon.
That is because with Windows Phone 7 Microsoft has decided to use Silverlight and XNA as development platforms. Silverlight is a Microsoft multimedia player and a competitor for the well-known Adobe Flash. On the other hand, XNA is a platform to develop games for Xbox 360.
“If you are a Silverlight or XNA developer today you’re gonna be really happy”, Kindel wrote.
That seems to be true, judging by the comments sent during and after a Q&A session on Twitter about this topic with the Windows Phone team at Microsoft.
