Good news for these tough economic times: Asustek President Jerry Shen has announced today that the company plans to launch an entry-level Eee PC for $200 (approximately 157 Euros) in 2009. By the way, $200 is the price point that companies want to reach from the moment that the market of the ultra notebooks began to grow.
Apparently, this is part of the strategy of the company to increase its market share in the netbook segment to 30%. The boost that can be provided to the product with this prices range could be huge, but also it’s necessary to keep in mind that other companies will probably be forced to follow the Asus path by lowering the prices of their items, or launching low-cost models, which would be good news for all of us.
Besides the announcement about the new low-cost computer, Shen talk about the plan of the company to discontinue its 7-inch and 8-inch Eee PCs, so the production can be focused on 10-inch items.
We’ll see if the $200 netbook will be the last one with 7-inch screen or if we will see a 10-inch netbook for $200 in 2009, which would be awesome.

I kind of love the Asus Eee PC because it is very small and very light. I have an Acer Laptop and it is really a big burden on my small shoulders ~
