The popular Internet phone service Skype will be available for iPhone users starting from March 31, 2009 and for Blackberry users in May, according to the Skype team. Users will be able to make calls to other online users (Skype-to-Skype) for free by using the Skype app (application) for iPhone through a Wi-Fi connection.
Today, Skype, which is owned by the Internet auction company eBay, will officially announce the launch of an Skype application for the iPhone and the MP3 player iPod Touch. As for Blackberry, another Skype application will be launched in May. At this time, there are more available apps for other mobile platforms including Nokia, Windows Mobile and Google Android.
Skype for iPhone will allow users to make phone calls over the Web, send instant messages and even share photos for free with other Skype users. Skype’s normal low rates will apply if users make calls to landlines or mobiles.
The only disadvantage (maybe) is that the users won’t be able to make calls by using their conventional mobile network without Internet. Instead, they will need to access to their Skype accounts by using a Wi-Fi network.
