Scientists decode dog talk

Ethologists at ELTE University in Budapest are doing their dogged best to understand what our four-legged friends are trying to say:

MacBook Air: Apple’s latest laptop

MacBook Air: Apple's latest laptopThe laptop took a new meaning with the newest invention of Apple. It is so thin it fits in a regular manila envelope.

In a speech in front of about 4000 attendees to MacWorld conference (San Francisco), Steve Jobs showed the latest model of laptops: MacBook Air.

With the theatrical style that characterizes him, Steve Jobs took out a regular manila envelope, legal size, and removed a real live Macbook Air. Jobs claimed he have made a comparison with all the current thinnest laptops.

The MacBook Air will be available in stores in two weeks and it will cost  $1,799. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile. It weighs about 3 pounds, and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It’s 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep. The MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life with wireless networking turned on.

Musana: My music anywhere, unlimited and free

Musana: My music anywhere, unlimited and freeMusana is a cool project in Private Beta (you need an invitation ticket to sign up) that will allow users to enjoy their digital music anywhere by storing the files in a music center available on the web or your cell phone. The service is based in France.

You will be able to upload the MP3 files from your computer (adding tunes) and create your music library in order to reproduce them as you would in front of your personal computer. The Musana Team has developed a sketch of the control panel in the homepage. There, you must grab a CD from the sample music library, drops it onto the middle of the page and then insert the CD into the virtual music player on the right (developed with Adobe Flash). Obviously, you should choose the tunes you want to listen to. You have some buttons similar to a music player: Pause, CD skip and Play.

I have tried Musana out for a while and I have to say that the interface is really friendly  and easy to use. Although it is a simple idea, I think many people will be glad to have a locker where they can store their music for free. Besides that, I have not seen any advertising on the site, which is cool, but maybe we will see it in the future.

Musana also have community capabilities because you can share your music with friends and comment about the tunes, artists, covers, etc. And you can get music recommendations according to your own taste, too.

If you want to request an invitation code, please click here (you can see the “Join button” there).

How can we live 14 extra years?

How can we live 14 extra years? To increase the longevity we don’t need any incantation. Not smoking, taking exercise, drinking in moderation and eating five rations of fruit and vegetables a day can lengthen our life approximately 14 years.  That is concluded from two researches published recently.

One of these researches, published in “PLoS Medicine” magazine, analyzed the healthy habits of about 20,200 men and women during more than one decade. These people are residents of Norfolk (United Kingdom). None of the participants had suffered a cardiovascular dysfunction or cancer before being part of the sample and all people were between 45 and 79 years old.

Participants were awarded a point for each of their four healthy behaviors. In the case of fruits and vegetables consumption, people with appropriate levels of vitamin C in blood were rewarded. On the other hand, drinking less than 14 units of alcohol (seven pints of beer) a week was considered as moderate alcohol consumption .

As for alcohol, the researchers, at Cambridge University, said that a low alcohol intake improved people’s chance of survival by 26% and, actually, not drinking at all and drinking a lot are considered as harmful situations.
