An American spy satellite stopped to work and now it has lost propulsion. For this reason, it will crash to Earth in late February or early March, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Monday.
“We are monitoring it … we take our obligations seriously with respect to the use of space”, Whitman said, but he didn’t want to give details about the characteristics of the satellite or where they think it will impact.
According to The New York Times, some experts said Monday it could be an experimental imagery satellite launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in December 2006.
The spy satellites are maneuvered in space in low orbit to meet military surveillance needs, and they require a highly toxic fuel, like the hydrazine, the specialists said.
* The following video shows a Russian rocket falling back to Earth over the Denver (USA) area last year. You can see how a solid cylinder becomes a mass of tiny pieces. The same should happen when spy satellite falls.
The amplification of a photograph taken by the Nasa Mars Rover (Spirit) in November of last year, on Mars surface, shows a greenish-brown human figure.
The discovery was made by “amateur astronomers”, according to an online report from The Daily Mail (British newspaper) published on Tuesday, and it was the result of a meticulous examination of the picture taken by NASA, which was published on January 2.
When the image was discovered, the American space agency just pointed out that it was captured by the exploration vehicle (Spirit) between November 6 and November 9, on the edge of a plateau when the vehicle was going through it. This plateau was called Home Plate, in the inner basin of the Columbia Hills range inside Gusev Crater.
NASA clarified that the taken panoramic image, looking toward the west, is a composition of separate pictures, and they were taken with Pancam filters. And the color is not real, but rather it has been modified to see details clearly.
To increase the longevity we don’t need any incantation. Not smoking, taking exercise, drinking in moderation and eating five rations of fruit and vegetables a day can lengthen our life approximately 14 years. That is concluded from two researches published recently.
One of these researches, published in “PLoS Medicine” magazine, analyzed the healthy habits of about 20,200 men and women during more than one decade. These people are residents of Norfolk (United Kingdom). None of the participants had suffered a cardiovascular dysfunction or cancer before being part of the sample and all people were between 45 and 79 years old.
Participants were awarded a point for each of their four healthy behaviors. In the case of fruits and vegetables consumption, people with appropriate levels of vitamin C in blood were rewarded. On the other hand, drinking less than 14 units of alcohol (seven pints of beer) a week was considered as moderate alcohol consumption .
As for alcohol, the researchers, at Cambridge University, said that a low alcohol intake improved people’s chance of survival by 26% and, actually, not drinking at all and drinking a lot are considered as harmful situations.
Some researchers in Israel said they have successfully created a version of the Bible on a chip smaller than a pinhead.
The 300,000 words of the books included on Hebrew Bible were written on a silicon surface covered by a thin layer of gold, at the Haifa Institute of Technology (Technion).
The researchers used rays of tiny particles called gallium ions in order to write the words on a square with 0,5 mm side length .
The aim of the researchers is to increase the interest in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Researchers from Maryland reported yesterday that the Earth’s tropical region, as defined by rain and wind patterns, expanded north and south over the past few decades, another sign of global climate change.
The tropics are coming closer to the poles, even faster than the expected speed according to existent models of climate change, the scientists informed in the journal “Nature Geoscience”. This would widen the area affected by hurricanes and modify precipitations pattern in subtropical regions, the researchers said.
Early signs of global warming include melting of ice and thawed land in the Artic region. The study released yesterday suggests the tropics are also changing as a response to higher temperatures.
The current expansion would shift the subtropical areas by including the Mediterranean region, the southwestern area of the United States, Mexico, southern Australia, South Africa and some parts of South America.
